The $1.8 trillion worldwide consumer wellness industry is familiar with trends that come and go; but today, consumers aren't just trying wellness trends blindly; they're asking, "What does science say?
Influencers flooding the consumer scene have brought a mix of wellness info, some reliable, some not. As consumers look to avoid deceptive marketing, healthcare provider advice is back in the spotlight.
In the United States, doctor suggestions rank third in influencing what consumers buy for their health.
Healthy aging
The demand for products and services promoting healthy aging and longevity is booming, fueled by the rise of preventive medicine, health tech, and anti-aging research. This trend has led to the emergence of Longevity Clinics as a promising business opportunity.
What is a Longevity Clinic?
A longevity clinic aims to boost health and lower the chances of age-related illnesses through various treatments. These clinics, run by licensed medical experts, offer a range of services and products. Some concentrate on spotting age-related diseases early, providing hormone and stem cell therapies, while others introduce cutting-edge treatments like 'anti-aging' supplement plans.
The recent shutdown of the NY longevity clinic Modern Age, after raising $33 million, made clear the challenges these clinics are facing: include standardizing practices, addressing cost disparities, and navigating the variety of clinics offering longevity services.
Clinics typically offer comprehensive tests and personalized recommendations, but concerns arise regarding the reliability of certain assessments like aging clocks and whole-body MRI scans. Furthermore, the proliferation of stem cell treatments raises safety and efficacy issues.
Petr Šrámek, Managing Partner at Longevitytech.fund, outlines what customers can anticipate from a reputable longevity clinic:
The clinic team includes experts from diverse longevity fields, prioritizing translational science.
The clinic should actively participate in longevity clinical studies.
MDs must have long-term experience managing patients with functional and integrative medicine approaches, dealing with modulation of biological pathways related to the roots of different conditions and being educated on the theory and applications of other areas like OMICS, cell biology, nutrition, and physical activity prescription.
The main focus should be medical interventions to increase healthspan.
The clinic shouldn't rely solely on "magic" equipment solutions but remain flexible to adopt safer and more effective tools as they emerge in the market.
The clinic should not offer quick fixes but rather long-term programs.
Despite these challenges, there's a consensus among longevity practitioners that living well into old age is attainable through lifestyle interventions, though achieving equitable access to longevity medicine remains a goal.
